Discovery doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens when curious minds collide, and that’s exactly what unfolded at our organization.

Our first Research Symposium, co-chaired by Dr. Roy Sillitoe and Dr. Michael Curtis, brought team members together from across every department under one theme: Advancing Health through Collaborations, Discoveries and Transformational Therapies. With 350 abstracts showcased, this special day reflected the depth of science taking shape across our organization and the collaborative future we’re building together.

That collaborative energy carried to the keynote stage, where Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi and Dr. Katherine King shared advances reshaping pediatric care. Dr. Zhandong Liu and Dr. Ananth Annapragada led a workshop on AI in research, pointing to where our science is headed next.

A defining moment came when Dr. Huda Zoghbi received the inaugural Texas Children’s Lifetime Research Impact Award. The honor recognizes team members whose work has driven transformative impact across our community, the nation and the world, reflecting our sustained commitment to research that improves the lives of patients and families across the globe.

Other team members earned recognition for their contributions to advancing pediatric medicine and research:

  • Pediatric Infectious Diseases Physician Dr. Katherine King, Keynote Lecturer Award

  • Assistant Professor of Radiology Dr. Andrew Badachhape, Oral Research Presenter Award

  • Assistant Professor of Pediatrics Dr. Jennifer Clinton, Oral Research Presenter Award

  • Orthopedic Research Assistant Dr. Zina Smadi, Oral Research Presenter Award

  • Neuroscience Trainee Lauren Peacoe, Oral Research Presenter Award

  • Assistant Professor of Maternal-Fetal Medicine Dr. Michael Jochum, Oral Research Presenter Award

“Serving as co-chair for Texas Children’s inaugural Research Symposium was a special honor,” Dr. Sillitoe said. “It provided a unique opportunity to bring together our diverse scientific communities for a truly outstanding day of idea-sharing and collaboration. The symposium sets the stage for a new way Texas Children’s conducts research, one reflected in the launch of the Texas Children’s Research Institute, grounded in collaboration, multidisciplinary and collective excellence. They say it takes a village to raise a child, and this symposium was our way of living that philosophy through science.”

Congratulations to our honorees and every team member who contributed to planning the event. The Research Symposium is more than a milestone for our organization. It’s our promise to keep breaking down silos, accelerating discovery and transforming what’s possible for the patients and families we serve.

In the latest Voice of Nursing blog post, Lori Ramirez shares how Texas Children’s partnership with Nurse Builders is helping nurses get ahead of the new Texas Board of Nursing (BON) continuing education (CE) tracking requirement.

EXCERPT: Beginning September 1, 2026, the Texas BON will implement a new CE tracking requirement. Under this rule, all nurses must upload proof of their required continuing education into the Texas Nurse Portal before renewing their license. This change results from Senate Bill 912, which enhances oversight and enforcement of CE requirements for licensed healthcare practitioners in Texas. No new account, subscription or fee is required to comply.

Nurse Builders supports this transition in several important ways. Since the platform is entirely electronic, all completed courses and hours are stored within each nurse’s account, making it easier to transfer CE documentation to the Texas Nurse Portal. Nurses can access more than 350 hours of free CE courses, including required trainings such as Human Trafficking Prevention and Nursing Jurisprudence and Ethics that fulfill Texas BON requirements.

Texas Children’s is featured in a recent People Magazine story highlighting Baylor’s journey after being diagnosed with biliary atresia, a rare liver disease, at just 3 days old. The story follows Baylor’s path to a life-saving liver transplant at Texas Children’s and the care and support his family received throughout the journey.

The feature also highlights the expertise of Dr. John Goss and the Texas Children’s transplant team, whose compassionate care helped Baylor and his family find hope during an incredibly difficult time.

Hospital Week, celebrated May 10–16, is a time to recognize the extraordinary impact our teams make across Texas Children’s. Healing happens because of you — the teams who deliver exceptional care, support one another and bring our values to life every day.

This year, we are celebrating with a shared theme: Healing with HEART, reflecting how our values shape the experience for patients and families, clinicians and the teams who support our mission.

Celebrate with Us

As part of this systemwide celebration, Hospital Week T-shirts will be distributed across Texas Children’s, and team members are invited to participate in Show Your HEART Day on Thursday, May 14, when teams across the organization will wear their shirts together — creating a visible expression of our culture and connection across every campus, clinic and care setting.

We’d love to see your teams celebrating across the organization. Share photos of your team in their Hospital Week shirts with Texas Children’s Communications for a chance to be featured in future Hospital Week communications and social media highlights.
