ART reinforces the essential policies, practices and expectations that support a safe, compliant and respectful environment for patients, families and teammates across our organization.

You are required to complete all course content to receive credit and submit the attestation.

  • Baylor College of Medicine contingent workers should follow instructions provided by Baylor College of Medicine, unless directed by Centralized Credentialing & Medical Staff Services.

  • Non-BCM contingent workers and volunteers should complete ART as directed by their leaders.

For 250 years, Independence Day has brought people together to celebrate the freedoms and values that shape our nation. This year, our team members celebrated alongside the communities we proudly serve at patriotic events across Houston and Austin, honoring this historic milestone while creating meaningful moments throughout the holiday.

Our Woodlands Campus joined the 50th Annual South Montgomery County Fourth of July Parade with a float recognizing the 250th anniversary of our country. As the parade made its way through The Woodlands, our team members greeted families and handed out Texas Children’s-branded squishy balls.

The creativity and contributions of our team members helped the float stand out, earning it the Best of Theme Award. The award recognizes the parade entry that best reflects the parade’s annual theme. This year’s theme was “America250: Come Join the Celebration!,” emphasizing the importance of unity and patriotism. Our patient Fitz, a cancer survivor, also participated in the celebration by serving as a Community Celebrity Parade Judge.

Our team members at The Woodlands Campus also volunteered at the Houston Symphony’s Star-Spangled Salute, an event our organization sponsored. They welcomed guests with enthusiasm and helped create a memorable evening filled with music, appreciation and celebration of our nation’s history.

The holiday also brought team members together in Austin, where our organization sponsored the Round Rock Fourth of July Parade. Team members from our Austin Campus, including our Kangaroo Crew, participated in the parade and handed out Texas Children’s-branded fans and patriotic pinwheels to families along the route. At our tent, our team members also shared information about how our Austin Campus is providing life-saving care to patients across Central Texas.

We are grateful for our team members who represented our organization and engaged with communities during Independence Day. Their commitment and compassion throughout the events reflect the qualities they demonstrate every day while caring for our patients, supporting their families and working with colleagues across our organization.

Radiology Post-Anesthesia Care Unit Nurse Laura Backus has dedicated 40 years to caring for children and families at Texas Children’s. Based at The Woodlands Campus, she has built a career defined by compassion, clinical excellence and a commitment to lifelong learning.

As Laura celebrates this milestone, we asked her to reflect on the experiences that have shaped her career and what continues to inspire her after four decades with our organization.

What does working 40 years at Texas Children’s mean to you?
It has been a privilege to care for children and families during some of their most vulnerable moments. Spending an entire career at one organization is rare today, and this milestone reflects the strength of Texas Children’s and its mission. I’m grateful for the opportunity and look forward to continuing this meaningful work.

How has your journey shaped you personally and professionally?
My years in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit built the foundation of my career. The PICU team taught me the impact of compassionate care and the true meaning of teamwork during life’s most critical moments.

What are some of your most memorable moments?
I’ve been fortunate to experience many milestones, from becoming the first registered nurse on the pediatric transport team before it became the Kangaroo Crew to caring for the first patient placed on an oscillator and working the first night shift in West Tower after the move from Abercrombie. I also created the multidisciplinary PICU flowsheet, served on ride-out teams during Hurricane Harvey, the winter freeze and Hurricane Beryl and helped open several new units across the organization.

What has meant the most to you over the years?
From the PICU to the PACU, I’ve learned the importance of resilience and adaptability. I’ve had the privilege of working alongside exceptional clinicians who are passionate about teaching, and even after 40 years, I continue to learn from them. I’m grateful for the opportunities to grow and humbled that colleagues often turn to me as a resource. Currently, I’m partnering with the Cardiology team to help outside institutions develop cardiac stress magnetic resonance imaging programs, giving me another opportunity to share what I’ve learned throughout my career.

 

Our hearts are with the people of Venezuela following the recent earthquakes. As a pediatric health system dedicated to caring for women and children around the world, we are thinking of every child, family, caregiver and community navigating the aftermath of this devastating event.

As health care professionals, we understand how quickly disasters can threaten the health, safety and well-being of children and their families. We also know that many in our global community have loved ones, friends and colleagues who may be directly affected. We stand with all those facing the days ahead and hope they find strength, healing and a safe path to recovery.

This week marks one year since the devastating Central Texas floods, a tragedy that forever changed the lives of children, families and communities across our state.

As we reflect on this anniversary, our thoughts remain with all those who continue to grieve, heal and rebuild, including members of our own Texas Children’s family who were personally impacted.

In the days that followed, we witnessed an extraordinary outpouring of compassion. Caregivers, first responders, volunteers, community partners, donors and Texas Children’s team members came together to support children and families during an incredibly difficult time.

We remain deeply grateful to everyone who continues to give their time, expertise and resources as communities recover.

As we remember this day, we extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has helped our neighbors heal and reaffirm our commitment to the children, families and communities of Central Texas.
