Global Health symposium draws more than 500 participants for an exchange of ideas on innovation

Texas Children’s Global Health Network, in partnership with the Baylor College of Medicine, hosted its first-ever virtual Research. Art. Innovation. Scholarship. Education (RAISE) Symposium from June 28 to July 2, drawing more than 500 registered participants from more than 20 countries across the world.

Sponsored by the Abbvie Foundation and carrying the theme, “Forging Ahead: Maintaining Excellence through Teamwork and Innovation,” the RAISE symposium aimed to catalyze the exchange of ideas through a showcase of innovative abstracts and interactive sessions. The event sought to enhance education and research skills through workshops, foster a culture of scholarship and promote a holistic approach to global health through arts and wellness. RAISE was also a celebration of the work of the Global Health Network that highlighted how complementary arts, the humanities, and science and medicine can be. The symposium kicked off with virtual exhibits featuring the talent of artists and authors across the network, which were available for asynchronous viewing. VoiceThread, an online exhibit platform, enabled participants, authors and artists to engage in discussion.

Organized by the Global Health Scholarship Community of Practice (CoP) Program, RAISE was intended to help authors sharpen their skills and nurture their confidence to share their scholarly work. As part of capacity enhancement, the CoP Program facilitated workshops and 20 peer coaches supported authors in preparing their abstracts for submissions, accepted oral presentations and E-posters at the symposium.

In total, the symposium showcased 48 poster presentations, 31 oral presentations and 101 pieces of artwork. There were more than 10 hours of live programming curated based on the art and abstract submissions, and scholarly works presented in multiple formats.

RAISE participants voted for their favorite artwork and E-poster, which were recognized during the closing award ceremony. One Foundation Showcase Project from the mini-workshop session was selected to advance into the Project Incubator session, an interactive capstone event where participants collaborated in teams to show off creative problem-solving skills and help push the project forward.

Since the RAISE Symposium, several abstract submissions have been accepted to other international conferences, including Paediatrics HIV 2021, HepHIV Conference – Lisbon and IAS 2021. The following artists and authors earned recognition at the event:
