Nurse Leader Award: Asten Agnew (LT CICU)

Asten has always shown great passion for learning and developing other nurses. In his role as educator he has brought many opportunities for growth to not only the nurses in the CICU but nurses in the whole Heart Center and beyond through cardiac class, preceptor development and simulation. Asten is extremely passionate about our nurse preceptors and is a part of the tiger team in the Heart Center working towards a strategic preceptor development platform. Working night shift, Asten works tirelessly to bring simulation time to the night shift staff. Asten has sought out staff for training as simulation instructors as well as volunteered himself to lead simulation with our physician providers. He is a valued team member and appreciated by the staff as well as all the other leaders in the Heart Center.

Diane Cao (West Tower 11)

Diane wore fun shirts like Marvel and Minecraft…she engaged my son in meaningful conversation and used her shirts to do so! Isolating a single moment can be difficult, but overall she had a great disposition and treated him like a person. She explained what she was doing and comforted him when he felt scared. She made me feel heard as a parent and always had an idea on how to help us accomplish what we needed to for our son’s recovery.

Dilmanpreet Gill (LT ACHD)

Before she was my actual nurse, I had always seen Dilman helping in my room and elsewhere when the assigned nurses needed help. It was very apparent before I met her that she was a team player and always willing to help with a smile on her face. Then she became my nurse for a few days, and she was just incredible and went over the top to help me feel comfortable and supported. Every day I had her, she went above and beyond to help advocate for me. She was an extremely important part of my healing.

Johanna Howell (PFW OR)

From the moment she introduced herself Johanna was amazing, calm, knowledgeable and informative. She was our saving grace that day. She was comforting in a way I didn’t know I needed, like a mom. Gentle, and calming with this presence that had me knowing I was okay. I look back on that day and still smile because I get this calming feeling when thinking of Johanna.

Suzannah Martin (West Tower 9)

Although we were not ready for admission and treatment, we were so graciously blessed by having Suzannah as our day shift nurse on the first day of the immunotherapy medication. She was such a wonderful and lighthearted nurse and cared for not only our daughter but my husband and I as well. She really eased our anxiety. My husband and I seriously could not have asked for a bigger blessing this time around and are so thankful to have nurses like Suzannah.

Brianne Sy (West Tower 11)

No matter how busy Bri was, she was never too busy to check on us, bring pain medication and just chat. There were times I would run down to the cafeteria and return to find her sitting in the chair next to my son’s bed discussing all of his favorite things. On Bri’s off days, my son would count down until she came back. We’ve been home for a few weeks, and my son still asks to go and visit her. Bri embodies everything that a pediatric nurse should be.
