Pediatric Hematologist-Oncologist Dr. Joseph Lubega is determined to ensure every child with cancer or a serious blood disorder can receive life-saving care, wherever they live.
That commitment has earned Dr. Lubega the Rice360 Innovation and Leadership in Global Health Award, which recognizes renowned professionals, researchers and clinicians who have made transformative, lasting impacts on global health.
As director of the Global HOPE (Hematology-Oncology Pediatric Excellence) Program at our Cancer and Hematology Center, Dr. Lubega established the first university-accredited pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship programs in Eastern Africa. Those programs have trained more than 35 specialists who now expand access to specialized care for children in their own communities.
His work reaches beyond training. Dr. Lubega also leads a partnership with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, strengthening sickle cell disease care by integrating essential services into primary health systems and supporting locally driven, sustainable care.
That same mission carried him to the keynote stage at the Rice360 Institute for Global Health Technologies Design Competition, where Dr. Lubega shared his insights with the next generation of medical innovators.
“I am deeply grateful and honored to receive this award as it represents the shared commitment and dedication of so many colleagues, partners and trainees who are working tirelessly to improve pediatric care globally,” Dr. Lubega said. “This recognition reinforces our shared mission — to build sustainable systems, train the next generation of specialists and ensure that every child, no matter where they are born, has access to high-quality, life-saving care.”
Join us in congratulating Dr. Lubega on this remarkable honor and the difference he continues to make in the lives of children in Africa and beyond.
