Your name, title and department. How long have you worked here?
My name is Sarah Kelly, and I’m a nurse practitioner with Texas Children’s Hospital Diabetes and Endocrinology team. I’ve been here for 2.5 years now!
Tell us how you found out you won a super star award.
My division chief Dr. Rona Sonabend announced it at the start of the awards ceremony we do for our graduating fellows every year. It was a very happy and special surprise for me.
What does it mean to be recognized for the hard work you do? How has the organization helped you achieve your personal and professional goals?
Winning this award was such an honor! I have my amazing team to thank. I am surrounded by people who inspire, support, and encourage me.
What do you think makes someone at Texas Children’s a super star?
Advocates for our patients and families, growth mindset, passion for the work we do.
What is your motivation for going above and beyond every day at work?
I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 23 years ago. I think having been on the other side of the stethoscope, my goal is to lead with empathy and to be a positive role model for children with diabetes. I try to highlight the things that are going well and meet patients/families where they’re at. It’s important to me that patients/families are included in decisions made about their care. Buy-in is critical for success.
What is the best thing about working at Texas Children’s?
I feel incredibly supported at Texas Children’s Hospital. There are so many opportunities for growth and development, and amazing mentors.
What does it mean to you that everyone at Texas Children’s is considered a leader? What is your leadership definition?
A great leader leads by example, listens, and values input from the entire team.
Anything else you want to share?
I’m just really proud to be part of my team.
