The Auxiliary Bridge was roaring with spirit as our beloved Houston Texans mascot, TORO, visited our hospital to celebrate his upcoming induction into the Mascot Hall of Fame — and what a celebration it was!

TORO paraded across the bridge walkway, surrounded by a cheerful crowd decked out in Houston Texans gear and waving eye-catching props. In addition to high-fiving enthusiastic team members, patients and families along the bridge, TORO stopped to strike fun and spirited poses.

Our paw-static animal-assisted therapy dogs, Melman and Pluto, stole the show, too. The fur-credible pups took photos with TORO and our patients, which were equal parts heartwarming and hilarious.

From TORO’s grand entrance to Melman and Pluto’s star-powered meet-and-greet, the energy on the bridge was electric. Together, we gave TORO the Hall-of-Fame welcome he deserves.

Make sure to check out the photos from the parade below to see all the unforgettable moments, and, once again, congratulations to TORO on this incredible honor!

As a medical assistant for our Cardiology clinic, Kaitlyn Goodson walks the same corridors and sees the same doctors who once cared for her when she was a patient at the Heart Center. Every morning, she goes to work with a clear purpose: support patients along a journey she knows by heart.

“Going through my heart journey showed me what it feels like to be vulnerable, scared and hopeful all at once,” Kaitlyn said. “That experience changed how I see healthcare. It’s not just about medicine, it’s about people, connections and making those patients feel seen and cared for.”

Kaitlyn was born with tetralogy of Fallot, a rare, congenital heart condition involving four different heart defects: ventricular septal defect, pulmonary stenosis, an overriding aorta and right ventricular hypertrophy.

She underwent her first surgery at Texas Children’s at just 3 weeks old, followed by more than a dozen operations before she turned 20.

Kaitlyn began her career in adult cardiology, but her medical history inspired her to pursue a career in pediatrics. She returned to Texas Children’s to work specifically with children facing the same fears and uncertainties she once carried. “I took the leap, and I absolutely love it,” Kaitlyn said.

As a medical assistant, Kaitlyn coordinates each patient’s visit. She escorts them to their echocardiogram, electrocardiogram, stress test or chest X-ray. She also comforts them during the parts of the day that can feel overwhelming.

“My most memorable moments while working here in the Heart Center have been watching these patients come in at the start of their heart journey and watching them grow and thrive throughout their visits,” Kaitlyn said.

Manager of Outpatient Nursing Dominique Villarin has watched Kaitlyn succeed as both a caregiver and colleague. “Kaitlyn is a very hard worker and a great resource for our newer medical assistants,” Dominique shared.

“She always goes above and beyond for our patients and ensures she provides them the best care,” she said. “Kaitlyn shows a lot of compassion for our families since she has gone through some of the very same things our patients have gone through. Our patients and team are lucky to have her.”

Although Kaitlyn has overcome many battles from her heart condition, she remains a patient at Texas Children’s, which she calls home. She receives care in the Adult Congenital Heart Program. The unique program transitions pediatric heart patients into lifelong, specialized adult treatment.

Kaitlyn’s heart health journey, from infancy to adulthood, has shaped not only her relationships with colleagues but also the way she connects with and cares for her patients.

“What makes me most proud of my role as a medical assistant is knowing I have come full circle from being a patient who once needed care to being someone who now helps provide it,” Kaitlyn said. “I’m proud to say that I can use my story to help comfort others and show them that healing and hope is possible.”

TORO Mascot Hall of Fame Parade

  • Auxiliary Bridge

Let’s pack the bridge and give TORO a celebration worthy of a Hall of Famer!

November brought extra-special woofs, wags and wiggles as the Child Life team celebrated the birthdays of several beloved animal-assisted therapy dogs from our Pawsitive Play Program.

Our furry four-legged heroes offer comfort, companionship and a calming paw to hold for patients and families navigating difficult moments every day. This month, we’re taking a moment to paws and reflect on how each fur-midable pup celebrated another trot around the sun.

Even though Pluto’s birthday was in October, we couldn’t fur-get to include him, because all our hardworking pups with recent birthdays deserve to be paw-lighted.
Name: Cohen
Handler: CJ Canlas
Work Location: The Woodlands
Birthdate: November 11, 2017
Our King of the Woods, Cohen, hosted a Tail G-8 Paw-ty for his eighth birthday at his favorite spot: the rehab gym. He looked fetching in a Houston Texans jersey while he played with his therapy fur-iends. His buddies honored him not just for his birthday but for his re-bark-able role in supporting hundreds of therapy sessions, cheering on patients, celebrating milestones and watching goals become a reality.

Name: Crosby
Handler: Shelby Strauser
Work Location: Medical Center and West Campus (Acute Care Units)
Birthdate: November 7, 2021
Our rawr-some pup Crosby had a dino-themed paw-ty for his fourth birthday. Turning dino-four was a roaring good time for Crosby, who spent time with his furry buddies and human pals. Those who attended his T-rexcellent paw-ty dug for dino bones, played games, colored pictures or made face masks.

Name: Pinto
Handler: Shelby Bonnet
Work Location: Medical Center and West Campus (Acute Care Units and Inpatient Rehab Unit)
Birthdate: November 5, 2015
On his milestone 10th birthday, Pinto proudly became the first furry team member at our hospital to keep working while in the double digits. It’s clear this dog-tor still has plenty of wag in his workflow. Our fur-ever young Beanie Boy spent the day offering tail wags, paw-fect snuggles and canine courage to patients at every station in our rehab gym. His signature smile did most of the heavy lifting, proving that sometimes the best therapy in the gym comes on four paws.

Name: Pluto
Handler: Hanna Kuhn
Work Location: Medical Center
Birthdate: October 1, 2017
For his eighth birthday, our floofy bark-box Pluto paw-tied through a dialysis outpatient celebration with tail-wagging joy. Our golden boy made his rounds to all his fur-iends to spread paw-sitive vibes. Even though he’s a big boy, he still sniffed out the most bark-tastic spots to curl up and comfort anyone in need.

Join us in wishing our fur-bulous facility dogs a Yappy Birthday and giving them — and our other furry heroes — a round of a-paws for all the joy and support they bring to our hospital every day!
