Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women has been a pioneer in maternal care since it opened in 2012. Leslie Goodwin, nurse manager for the Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) team, began her career at Texas Children’s as the first clinical nurse coordinator in MFM. She knew from the moment Texas Children’s announced it was expanding into maternal care she wanted to be part of it. Now, she is a driving force in the expansion of maternal care access in the Houston area and beyond.

The MFM team is tasked with providing essential consultation and support in diagnosing and treating pregnant women at risk for serious complications during pregnancy. This diverse team collaborates with specialists from multiple fields for fetal imaging, genetic counseling and care for multiple pregnancies, heart disease, infectious disease and other conditions. They run the gamut from closely monitoring and managing high-risk pregnancies to preventing conditions like preeclampsia. More than that, they provide personalized care plans and offer support and guidance to patients during what can be a very difficult and stressful time.

Leslie leads this team of nurses and specialists with a commitment to open and transparent communication. A big unit comprised of several smaller teams, she is responsible for the antenatal testing team, MFM clinic team in the Medical Center, and the nurses in the MFM community clinics. She has her hands in leading the coordinator group, working with business teams and coordinating with the fetal center and ultrasound. She keeps an open-door policy with all of them, always making sure she is available to her team members. “I am in constant communication with them,” said Leslie. “I think it’s just very important to be available.”

As a nursing leader, Leslie is an exemplary advocate for her team and patients alike. “Through her actions and decisions, I can tell she’s always thinking of what is best for the patients we see in MFM and her staff’s well-being,” explained MFM Nurse Coordinator Katherine Wang. Dealing with challenges in staffing and changes in the department, Leslie doesn’t pretend things are easy when they aren’t. But she leads her team to adapt to these changes with grace and positivity. “She keeps our team focused on patient needs and safety while maneuvering through the changes with grit and resilience,” said Katherine.

The work done by MFM impacts many for the better, but Leslie is most proud of the specialty clinics, specifically the cardiology clinic. The first of its kind for the system, this clinic combines cardiac and prenatal care, enabling the team to provide for pregnant moms with heart disease or cardiac problems in pregnancy. “Having patients that started their care at Texas Children’s when they were babies seeing the congenital heart team and literally coming back to the Pavilion when they’re pregnant, it’s like a lifetime cycle completed at Texas Children’s,” said Leslie. “They feel comfortable receiving their pregnancy care here because they got excellent care at the Heart Center.” As a result of the cardiology clinic, expansion into additional specialty clinics has begun including rheumatology, renal and neurology. Leslie can’t wait to move into more specialty services as the clinic grows.

Furthering their commitment to excellence, Leslie and the MFM team have spearheaded several quality improvement initiatives, including AMEWS ambulatory training and development of clinical operations-based continuity. These efforts have streamlined clinic workflows, improved patient outcomes and set new standards for MFMs across the nation. Leslie also promotes ongoing educational opportunities for the team via huddles, rounding and virtually. Her ability to foster a supportive environment has been an inspiration to her nursing teams, leading them to lean in and cross train sister teams within MFM.

The MFM team has a lot of exciting and historic work on the horizon. Their commitment to excellence and compassionate care make them an outstanding team and an exemplar for all to follow. Under Leslie’s leadership, they are poised for continued success. “Her leadership goes beyond the workplace,” outlined MFM Nurse Coordinator Myrla Balderas. “She is a great example of servant leadership. Her support for each of us and the team as a whole goes over and beyond what her role requires. This unit is a better place to work in because of her.”

“She built this MFM clinic, and this place is a well-oiled machine because of her leadership and direction,” MFM Clinical Nurse Coordinator Erin Balmert described.

Texas Children’s is proud of the work being done by Maternal Fetal Medicine and Leslie Goodwin. Together, they are a living embodiment of The Difference.

Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women earns accreditation as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology. Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) administers this best-in-class accreditation every three years, and Texas Children’s has earned this designation for the third consecutive time starting in 2018. We are the only Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology in Houston and one of four in the state.

The surveyor had high marks for our program and commented, Texas Children’s is “perfect example of a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology” and “your passion is palpable.”

This designation would not be possible without our dedicated nurses and their commitment to providing excellent care preoperatively, during surgery and post-operatively. In addition to the accreditation, a number of our surgeons received Master Surgeon titles. Congratulations to Drs. Xiaoming Guan (program director), Tamisa Koythong, Joseph Nassif and Geoffrey Schnider for this honor. These are the first Master Surgeon titles for Drs. Koythong and Nassif.

“This designation shows our providers are committed to providing safe and effective patient care by supplying a high concentration of expertise in their field,” said Nakeisha Tolliver, director of Perioperative Services. “Becoming a Center of Excellence proves we are continuously improving outcomes, reducing complications for our patient population and increasing case volumes.”

About SRC – Surgical Review Corporation

Congratulations to Dr. Andrea Cruz on receiving the 2024 Mayor’s Hispanic Heritage Award in Healthcare. Dr. Cruz is a professor in the department of pediatrics and specializes in emergency medicine and infectious diseases

This award recognizes an outstanding person who has increased awareness of healthcare issues affecting Hispanics and Houstonians and has enacted improvements. Dr. Cruz is a highly respected physician who has significantly impacted the lives of families in Houston, the United States and globally due to her clinical care and research in pediatric medical specialties of traumatic brain injury, mental health, tuberculosis and several bacterial infections.

“Dr. Andrea Cruz is a highly esteemed pediatrician whose clinical care and groundbreaking research in pediatric specialties of infectious diseases and emergency medicine—specifically including traumatic brain injury, mental health, tuberculosis (TB), and severe bacterial infections—have profoundly impacted the lives of families in Houston, across the U.S., and around the world,” said Dr. Lara Shekerdemian, Pediatrician-in-Chief and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine. “The Department of Pediatrics is proud to call Andrea a colleague and friend!”

Dr. Cruz was nominated for this award by Dr. Keila Lopez, Associate Professor of Pediatric Cardiology, who serves on the Mayor of Houston’s Hispanic advisory Board as the only physician representative. Former recipients of this annual award include Dr. Flor Munoz from Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi, Division Chief of Tropical Medicine.

Alzheimer’s is a cruel disease. Those with loved ones suffering from it would do just about anything for a cure. Texas Children’s executives Dan Gollins and Paige Schulz are two such people with intimate connections to Alzheimer’s.

Dan’s grandfather and mother both fought courageous battles. After 14 long years, his mother lost her fight at just 64 years old. His family has committed to supporting those in research, and his father sat on the Board of Directors for the Alzheimer’s Association in Tampa up until 2019. Dan himself now serves on the Board of Directors for the Houston chapter.

Paige lost her mother to Alzheimer’s in 2020. Finding herself a member of the sandwich generation, caring for an ailing parent while raising elementary school aged children, she was struck by how challenging it was to navigate the health care system with this disease. She and her family support the research done at the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute (Duncan NRI), which gives them hope for the future in finding meaningful therapeutics and one day, a cure.

The Alzheimer’s Association has been an important supporter of research at the Duncan NRI and Baylor Center for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative disease. Together, the team is leading initiatives to transform Alzheimer’s disease care, integrating genetic risk predictions and more targeted, precise medicine strategies. The effort brings together clinicians, computer scientists, and basic and translational investigators to tackle this complex disease from multiple angles, drawing important lessons from our success at solving pediatric disorders.

Texas Children’s is proudly sponsoring the Kid’s Zone at the upcoming 2024 Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease. This event will be held on Saturday, November 9, beginning at 9:30 a.m. and will start at Lynn Eusan Park on the UH Campus (4800 Calhoun Rd., Houston, TX 77004). If you are interested in joining a walk team, please sign up here.

This year, anyone who signs up by October 15 will receive a free custom walk T-shirt with the Duncan NRI logo and the tag line, “Solving the unsolvable.”

There will also be a kick-off event on October 18 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., which will be held in the NRI 7th floor conference center reception space. During the event, recent Baylor College of Medicine recipients of Alzheimer’s Association research funding will be recognized. Over the years, this generous support has promoted critical research at the DNRI and across BCM, uncovering key mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease, highlighting promising drug targets and bringing us closer to new therapies for Alzheimer’s and related causes of dementias.

Join the team for the kick-off event on October 18 to celebrate these important contributions and reaffirm our commitment to Alzheimer’s research, and on November 9, unite with TCH colleagues for a spirited Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease.
