It’s terrifying for any mother who has to deliver a baby too soon. It’s an overwhelming time worrying if the baby will be healthy to dealing with leaving a baby in a hospital for an extended period of time. One of this year’s executive sponsors of Texas Children’s 2023 March of Dimes fundraising campaign, Denise Tanner-Brown, knows this all too well.

Tanner-Brown, Associate Chief Nurse Executive and Vice President shares her experience:
“As an aunt of a premature baby, I’ve seen what this can do to a family, so this is more than just a fundraiser for me, this is personal. Mothers of premature babies go through so much just dealing with the loss of a “normal” pregnancy and having a “healthy baby.” The guilt of leaving a baby in the hospital is overwhelming and then trying to sort through all the questions and challenges in your mind is anxiety inducing. From thinking about maternity leave, enrolling a preemie in daycare to the expense of having a baby in a hospital and even paying for parking is so much for anyone to handle. After watching this unfold in front of my eyes with my family, I just had to get involved. I want to fight for the voiceless, frustrated and scared and take the opportunity to amplify their needs in a way that instigates change.”

We all have a role to play when it comes to emergency preparedness. We can’t always predict when a crisis may happen, but being prepared for one can be key to keeping everyone healthy and safe.

TAKE ACTION – Employee Disaster Roster (EDR)

It takes all of us working together and doing our part to keep our system running when disaster strikes. All team members must re-register annually for the Employee Disaster Roster – electing to be part of the Prep Team, Ride-Out Team and/or Relief Team. Details for each team are listed in the form, and you should work with your leader to agree on the appropriate role for you.

Note, if you’re on the ride-out team, you can use this easy checklist to pack your at-work disaster bag with 5-7 days of essential supplies.

Everbridge Event Management Platform

When emergencies happen, Texas Children’s will rely on the Everbridge platform to keep you informed. Whether through text, phone and/or email, team members can be reached in seconds when a critical event takes place.

We know messages received on your personal device can be a distraction, and that’s why we are committed to using this channel only when necessary to protect people and property.

Be sure you’re on the list:

  • If your contact information is correct in Voyager, you’re on the list. If you’re not getting messages, please review your information, paying particular attention that your mobile number is in the correct field.
  • If you have previously opted out, we strongly encourage you to opt back in by texting the word “RESUME” to 89361.
  • Visit the Department of Organizational Resilience SharePoint site for contact information and links to websites to help you create an emergency preparedness plan of your own.

Texas Children’s is thrilled about the return of Baylor MedCare (Baylor) and CommonSprit Health/St. Luke’s to Cigna Healthcare networks. As a premiere employer focused on prioritizing your health and well-being, we work, diligently, to ensure that you have access to resources that will positively impact your lives.

Strong bonds with trusted providers are invaluable.

The agreement between Cigna and Baylor, and Cigna and St. Luke’s, allows you to partner with doctors and health care professionals within these provider networks that you feel are a best fit for you and your family. With that in mind, please note that Baylor rejoined the Cigna network, effective January 9, 2023. Please also be aware that CHI St Luke’s Health System rejoined the Cigna network, effective March 1, 2023.

Baylor and CHI St Luke’s Health staff are prepared for the change. While Cigna anticipates no challenges with your providers rejoining its network, the organization does have a support team in place to help you navigate through the re-engagement. You can reach a Cigna One Guide Advocate at 1-800-342-6664, by chat on myCigna.com or through the myCigna App.

Thank you, Texas Children’s employees, for your dedicated service to women and children. We are honored to support you with the highest quality care and services available.
