There’s no doubt that our administrative roles at Texas Children’s are incredibly diverse with a wide variety of responsibilities to keep the organization going – and if one thing is certain, it’s that these professionals often go above and beyond their regular duties.

For Administrative Professionals Day on April 21, we’re proud to honor the men and women across the system who are efficient, hard-working, dependable, organized and wonderful in so many ways. Thank you for all that you do, and enjoy your special day!

We are also proud to recognize four outstanding administrative professionals who earned recognition this year in The Admin Awards®, often referred to as the “Academy Awards for Admins.” The awards are the first and only public recognition program of their kind in the country that focus specifically on recognizing and rewarding the achievements, dedication and importance of administrative professionals, who are nominated for consideration by their supervisors and fellow team members.

Kudos to our Texas Children’s people who were spotlighted in the 2021 Admin Awards celebration:

Texas Children’s Transplant Team dressed up for National Donate Life Blue & Green Day on April 16 as a part of National Donate Life Month, which is held each April and dedicated to raising awareness for organ and tissue donation.

National Donate Life Month is also a time to reflect and show gratitude for the many courageous donors and donor families who have saved lives through the gift of donation.

If you have not considered being an organ donor, now is a great month to make that choice. Being an organ donor is a selfless act that can save up to eight lives. Donors leave a courageous legacy, and in some ways, are able to live on in transplant recipients. For more reasons why you should register to be an organ donor, check out this blog from Diana Harter, assistant clinical director of Transplant Services.

Texas Children’s is one of the largest and most active pediatric transplantation programs in the country. Learn more about our services and programs for patients awaiting an organ transplant by clicking here.

Ready to commit to life in the event of a tragedy? Visit www.RegisterMe.org to become an organ donor, and check out www.donatelife.net for more on organ and tissue donation.

If you know a nurse whose super-human work makes a difference for our Texas Children’s patients and their families every day, now is the time to nominate him or her to receive well-deserved recognition through The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards excellence in nursing and recognizes the clinical skills, compassion and care that nurses provide. It was founded in memory of Patrick Barnes, a 33-year-old patient who passed away in 1999 after battling an auto-immune disease. During his 8-week hospital stay, Barnes’ family was especially appreciative of the nurses they met and the excellent care they provided to him.

Since establishing The DAISY Foundation and developing the award program shortly after Barnes’ death, nearly 125,000 nurses around the world have been honored – including many of our own nurses here at Texas Children’s.

Submit a nomination today!

DAISY Award honorees are in-patient nurses who work in any clinical setting. Nominations are accepted year-round and can be submitted by anyone at Texas Children’s – a patient, family member, peer, physician, clinician or other staff member – who experiences or observes extraordinary compassionate care being provided by a nurse.

To access the nomination form, click here or visit http://www.DAISYnomination.org/TCH.

Saluting our 2020 DAISY Award recipients

After winning the Get the Vaccine to End COVID-19 Drawing, the following team members tell us why they stepped up to be vaccinated and hope to inspire others.

Julissa (Julie) Wactor – 2.6 years of service
Staff Nurse – Urgent Care, Cinco Ranch
Why I got the COVID vaccine? One person closer to herd immunity. To help end this pandemic. I believe in science. I want to go back to our “normal.”

Kimberly Thompson – 7.5 years of service
Ambulatory Services Rep II, The Woodlands
I didn’t have a second thought about getting the vaccine when it was offered. I always considered my family and friends who I have contact with. I couldn’t bear the thought of exposing anyone else if I were Asymptomatic. When this virus infected four of my family members at the same time, I saw the effects of this dreadful virus of which one of my family members lost his fight. Thankfully, I already had my first dose. I was the green light for the rest of my family to move forward and conquer the fear of being vaccinated.

Tiana Beattie – 14.7 years of service
Sr. Business Systems Analyst
I decided to get the COVID vaccine to protect myself and others from this virus. Originally, I was against getting the shot but after doing my own research and listening to many of the conference calls the organization offered, I felt in my spirit it was the right thing to do. I had to fully understand that it’s not a cure but helps build immunity to fight the virus if I were exposed.

To date, more than 10,200 of Texas Children’s employees have received at least one vaccine dose.
If you haven’t already, schedule your vaccination appointment now, simply click here and sign up for the date and time that work best for your schedule.

Given the enormous vaccine participation from everyone, we have extended the Get the Vaccine to End COVID-19 $1,000 Drawing to Friday, April 30. Now Texas Children’s team members have multiple chances to win prizes in celebration of the vaccine breakthrough.

In addition to the $1,000 Drawing, Winner’s Choice Team Drawing kicked off on April 1, giving team members who have received at least one vaccine dose the opportunity to win some of the most sought-after electronics on the market. With the arrival of a third vaccine option and more of our colleagues and loved ones every day, this new contest is another way to express our appreciation for all those who have stepped up to lead the way. For complete drawing rules and eligibility, click here.

For our continued celebration of Patient Experience Month, we’re shining a light on gratitude and the opportunity each Texas Children’s team member has to express appreciation to the patients, families and colleagues who make a difference in our lives.

Whether you submit a Caught You Caring note to someone who deserves recognition, speak positively about others or just make time to be fully present and actively listen – sharing your gratitude can be a powerful way to show how much you care.

Ready to extend the thank-you that brightens someone’s day? Post this fun visual to your workstation with 21 ways to express gratitude in 2021, and read on for inspirational stories about our fellow team members who have made demonstrating and living with gratitude a part of their daily routines.

Their love for their job and their patients shines daily

For Paola Arizmendi Sanchez and Criselda Solis, making patients at Texas Children’s Specialty Care Austin feel special starts with art supplies and the roll of paper on the exam room tables.

Sanchez and Solis draw cheerful pictures that range from seasonal themes and holidays, to characters from Disney movies and popular cartoons. They also leave each patient a personalized message.

“The parents are really appreciative of the gesture,” said Solis, a medical assistant.

Sanchez, a nurse, added that the artwork helps patients feel more at home. “I hope to make the rooms less scary, especially now that providers and medical personnel have to wear masks and goggles,” she said.

The impact of their kindness isn’t lost on clinic providers, either. Dr. Ravneet Donegan has noticed that the drawings and messages help patients feel welcome and excited to be there, while Dr. Kavita Patel has seen the simple artwork make visits to the doctor more fun.

“It adds a personal touch and shows each patient that we see them as a unique individual. For the younger children, it helps allay fear and provides a positive distraction in what can otherwise be an intimidating experience,” said Dr. Alison Humphrey. “I am so grateful to work with these exceptional colleagues.”

She goes above and beyond to make sure every staff member feels appreciated’

Clinical educator Haley Visneau has an upbeat attitude, a ready smile and a playful sense of humor that helps her colleagues throughout Texas Children’s Urgent Care know they are appreciated and seen for everything they do.

No matter the time of day, Visneau makes herself available to support her fellow team members. She sparks engagement by sending out emails that provide important information in an eye-catching way, and strives to touch base with each of her colleagues to offer encouragement before she leaves the clinic each day.

“Haley’s energy and actions are always so positive and uplifting,” said Heather Journeycake, manager of advanced practice providers for TCUC. “Everyone is happy when they see Haley in the clinics.”

Creating magic for everyone is a passion of mine

Anyone who has visited the second floor of the outpatient building at The Woodlands can tell you about Jessi Carcamo and the way she brings a smile to the face of anyone who steps through the door.

An ambulatory service representative with a natural flair for making any atmosphere feel festive, Carcamo dresses up in theme for every holiday – and on the days in between, she can be seen wearing costumes and accessories that delight everyone she meets. It’s all part of her daily effort to turn someone’s day around with a warm smile and heartfelt hello.

“I have always found a great sense of gratification in knowing I was able to help someone,” said ‘Ms. Jessi,’ as she is affectionately known. “I am passionate about customer service, kindness, empathy, inspiration and compassion. If you are ever in the area, stop on by and I promise you’ve got a friend in me.”

How do you show gratitude?

We want to see how you express gratitude to patients, families and/or colleagues. Submit a photo of your efforts to patientexperience@texaschildrens.org. Submissions will be accepted through Wednesday, April 21, and may be displayed on Connect in the virtual Acts of Gratitude photo gallery.
