A reassured sibling submitted the following Caught You Caring recognition for Unit Support Assistant Sonya Winters.

“Ms. Sonya is such an amazing person overall! I told her she was sent from God because for some reason she gave the patient (my brother), my mom and myself a lot of reassurance that everything will be okay and we felt in our hearts it was going to be okay. She was so sweet and very caring. She went above and beyond for my brother and I’m so thankful for her. I’m glad she came in the room before she left home, I wanted to thank her before we left. She is the best!!!!! And deserves all the recognition!!! Thank you Ms. Sonya.”

A grateful parent submitted the following Caught You Caring recognition for Dr. Adam Cantor.

“My 16-month old son had an appointment with Dr. Cantor and I want to recognize the amazing compassion he showed. I let Dr. Cantor know he would probably fight and I was ok holding him for the exam. Instead, Dr. Cantor said “let’s just try” and without my son being restrained he started singing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Dr. Cantor had my son’s complete attention and he stayed still and compliant throughout the entire exam. This was such a huge thing not only for this particular visit but also for long-term coping as my son will likely need ophthalmology visits three times per year in addition to other medical appointments. Dr. Cantor’s kindness, compassion and patience have set the stage for my son to continue to have positive expectations for medical appointments and not be fearful. THANK YOU SO MUCH!”

After a nearly three-year hiatus due to COVID-19, April 18 marked the return of a beloved 34-year Texas Children’s tradition: The New Employee Pep Rally.

President and CEO Mark A. Wallace created these events to convey his passion and appreciation for the newest members of Texas Children’s. During the pep rallies, employees and their leaders mingle, enjoy light refreshments and learn about the history and mission of Texas Children’s from Mr. Wallace himself. But that’s not all: Mr. Wallace doesn’t leave until he has met and taken a photo with every person in the room (duck-face selfies included).

The April 18 pep rally also included a special performance of the Texas Children’s Ukulele Choir’s, “The Texas Children’s Way,” a heart-felt, original song encompassing the four values our team members live out daily.

“It’s wonderful to bring back the pep rallies as they have always been such a cherished tradition at Texas Children’s,” said Mr. Wallace. “I loved seeing all the smiling faces and so many leaders present to help welcome and cheer on our newest employees. It was another great day at Texas Children’s!”

An appreciative colleague submitted the following Caught You Caring recognition for Ambulatory Services Representative Crystal Duggan.

“Crystal is consistently going above and beyond for patient care. She saw me (PT) working with a toddler on bike riding. The patient was getting frustrated and wanted to stop the activity. Crystal was walking past and spent the extra time to motivate my patient with high fives, cheering and showing him stickers to help him finish the task of bike riding down the hallway. With her help, he happily completed the task! I always appreciate Crystal’s help with motivation and improving the patient experience while at therapy, despite this being outside her job role as a medical ASR.”

A grateful parent submitted the following Caught You Caring recognition for Patient Transporter Leroy James.

“Leroy took our daughter to her first surgery at West Tower, and she was so scared and anxious. He chatted with her and made her feel so at ease. We have been here for four months and he always smiles and says hi when we see him. He has such a positive attitude and makes staying here more enjoyable. He is also one of the hardest working people we know.”

Texas Children’s Hospital joins elite company as it has achieved, for the fifth consecutive time, Magnet® designation – the highest and most prestigious recognition provided by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Following a virtual site visit on February 21-24, appraisers submitted a written summary to the Magnet® Commission for review and final approval of redesignation. There was an incredible amount of positive feedback throughout the visit, and with each pass of the baton, the appraisers were impressed by our nurses’ energy, passion for our mission, and pride in working at Texas Children’s.

After much anticipation, Texas Children’s received a call on Thursday, April 20, announcing the hospital’s long-awaited redesignation.

“I am immensely grateful for our incredible nursing staff, our superb nursing leaders, our world-renowned physicians and every team member who impacts patient care across the organization,” said Texas Children’s President & CEO Mark A. Wallace. “Achieving Magnet® designation for 20 years is exceptional and a testament to our structure and the strength of our nursing leadership team. Our ability to consistently improve the care and treatment we provide to our patients is the ultimate reason our One Amazing Team is truly beyond compare.”

Texas Children’s has been a Magnet®-designated organization since 2003. Every four years, the hospital applies for redesignation to reflect our ongoing commitment to providing quality patient care and advancing nursing practice.

To achieve Magnet® status, health care organizations must submit an application and complete a thorough review process that requires system-wide engagement from nursing, physicians and multidisciplinary teams. When applying for designation, the ANCC requires organizations to provide documentation and supporting evidence that aligns with Magnet® standards and demonstrates improvement and sustainability in quality nursing care and outcomes.

“There are no words to describe how truly thankful I am to everyone who engaged in our virtual site visit and showcased our ongoing commitment to advancing nursing excellence,” said System Chief Nurse Executive Jackie Ward. “The enthusiasm and warmth of our team made the appraisers feel like they were physically present with us, and enabled them to appreciate our unique Texas Children’s culture.”

“Recognition for 20 years of nursing excellence is a huge accomplishment we can all be proud of,” added Ward. “I’m honored to lead and work alongside this inspiring team every day!”

Only 10% of U.S. hospitals are recognized with this elite national credential, and Texas Children’s is one of the very few to achieve five consecutive designations. Please join us in congratulating the entire Nursing team and all who participated in our Relay to Redesignation!
