Texas Children’s Transport Team members receive Shamrock Award

The Quality and Safety Department recognizes individuals or groups who have excelled in providing Patient Safety with the monthly Shamrock Award. Members of Mission Control, Kangaroo Crew and CICU (Transport team: Teri Burditt, RN; Anastasia Mc Curry, RT; Derrick Clay, EMT; Dr. Ellie Souganidis, CCM fellow; Mission Control team: Karen Morales, Kangaroo Crew, CN; Kassi Dansby, EMT – Mission Control; Dr. Satid Thammasitboon, Kangaroo Crew Medical Control; CICU accepting: Dr. Nirica Borges, CICU accepting physician) were recognized in November 2021.

A call was received from West Campus to Mission Control for a neonate with narrow complex tachyarrhythmia and depressed function. West Campus did not have Sotalol, the definitive drug for treatment.

All teams were out on transport at the time of the call. Mission Control created and ad hoc team, Sotalol was ordered and picked up from CICU pharmacy by Dr. Souganidis. They dispatched transport to West Campus, and were able to transport safely back to the Medical Center with drug infusing. In absence of this team, we would have had to give the neonate with depressed function amiodarone, with IV calcium – which could have depressed his systolic function even more. This demonstrated great coordination with Cardiology and EP services.

The agile high performing team was able to rescue this patient who needed this medication to correct his Rhythm. Mission Control and Kangaroo Crew were able to assemble additional personnel in real time to address the urgent need, even through change of shift/rush hour and competing calls.
