Just in time to kick off the holiday season, the Grinch left Whoville and made a stop in Austin! Sponsored by Texas Children’s Hospital, Grinchmas at Domain Northside offered families a free, fun-filled afternoon of celebration and got everybody in the holiday spirit.

In addition to meeting the Grinch himself, participants also enjoyed holiday tunes, a Vannagram photo booth, bracelet bar, hair tinsel studio, caricature artists and face painters, letters to Santa, and the official tree lighting to close out the evening.

“Texas Children’s won Austin this holiday season with Grinchmas at the Domain,” said Dr. Bryan Vartabedian, Chief Pediatrics Officer of Texas Children’s Austin. “The line to meet the Grinch seemed to be half a mile long…it was just amazing to connect with these families and see so much energy around Texas Children’s!”

Last week, all three Texas Children’s campuses kicked off the holiday season with a Tree Lighting event that included fun activities for kids, food and drinks, live ballet performances, visits from Santa, and more! Thanks to the support of our volunteers, community partners and dedicated employees, the celebrations were a huge success. Click through the gallery to see pictures from The Woodlands and West Campus events.

The holiday fun doesn’t stop there! Departments like Child Life, Volunteer Services and Patient & Family Services are collaborating all month long to coordinate a variety of exciting events across the system that bring festive cheer to our patient families and employees. Read below for a summary of each.

Tree Farm

This holiday season, Medical Center Campus will receive 150-200 fully decorated Christmas trees from donor J&J Flooring Group! Patients will have the opportunity to explore an on-site tree farm located in The Zone on Tuesday, December 13, and select a special tree to brighten their hospital room.

Holiday Cheer at the Center

The Center for Children and Women will host its annual Holiday Cheer celebration for patients, families and staff to capture the magic of the holiday season! Attendees will be able to take pictures with Santa, meet and greet Olaf and the Grinch, and travel through various holiday stations. Patients will also have the opportunity to get up-to-date on their flu vaccine!

  • The Center – Southwest: Wednesday, December 14, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • The Center – Greenspoint: Thursday, December 15, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Santa visits

Santa Claus is coming to Texas Children’s! He will return on Thursday, December 15, to make in-person visits to Medical Center Campus inpatient floors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Candy Cane Lane

Thanks to the generous contributions from families, staff, organizations and our community, Texas Children’s receives many donations during the holiday season. To support this giving, Volunteer Services will host contactless Candy Cane Lane Donation Drive-Through events at all three campuses on Saturday, December 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donors may also schedule a donation drop-off by contacting Volunteer Services. For donation-related questions, please contact Volunteer Services at volunteerservices@texaschildrens.org.

Candy Cane Wishes Program

Santa’s elves (our incredible volunteers) will help fill bags of toys for patients across Medical Center Campus based on preferences and holiday wishes. From December 20-22, volunteers will review Wish Lists and hand-select toys to create personalized gift bags for patient distribution.

You showed up and showed out for Halloween Spirit Week, and we loved seeing all the funky hats, spooky socks, and festive gear! The competition was stiff for our Costume Contest, but congratulations to the winners chosen by our very own Texas Children’s volunteers:

Team Winner: Pain Medicine – “Sesame Street”

Individual Winner: Dr. Rayne Rouce – “Troll”

The Department of Pediatrics also hosted an impressive Pumpkin Decorating Contest on The Auxiliary Bridge with voting open to employees, patients and visitors. The entries were other-worldly, and we were all impressed by the talent of our teams who participated!

Leading up to spirit week, Spirit Halloween helped us host a delightfully spooky Halloween party in the Child Life Zone complete with costumes and crafts for our patients. For fifteen years, their Spirit of Children program has partnered with Texas Children’s to improve the lives of children and raise funds for our Child Life program. So far, they’ve raised $2.7 million for Texas Children’s, half a million of it in 2021 alone. Click here to read more about the partnership.

Thanks to all who joined in on the fun and made Halloween an exciting and memorable experience for our patients and team members. Click through the gallery to see some of our favorite costumes, pumpkins and moments from Spirit Week!
