Specialty Pharmacy expands services to Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic

Texas Children’s Specialty Pharmacy is pleased to announce the recent opening of its newest unit in the Bone Marrow Transplant outpatient clinic.

Bone marrow transplants can benefit pediatric patients with both cancerous and non-cancerous diseases by infusing the body with healthy blood-forming stem cells. After the procedure, patients may need to take up to 20 medications to prevent rejection and infection, and these complex regimens require families to fill and manage insurance coverage for multiple prescriptions – many of which are expensive and not available at local pharmacies.

This recent expansion for BMT patients was championed within the clinic by Dr. Caridad Martinez and Dr. David Steffin. The new service has been warmly welcomed by unit staff and patient families.

The Specialty Pharmacy program was founded in 2016 to offer families comprehensive support including 24/7 access, detailed guidance on dosing and therapy adherence, refill reminders, free home delivery, insurance authorization and, where applicable, financial assistance. Our highly skilled pharmacists are embedded within the units they serve, allowing them to work directly with the patient’s medical team to ensure an excellent continuum of care.

Specialty Pharmacy’s 15 other clinics include Neurology, Endocrine, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Renal, Pulmonary, and Allergy & Immunology, among others; they are located at the Texas Medical Center as well as West Campus and The Woodlands. Click here to learn more.
