Learn more on how to support women’s heart health

While nearly 80% of cardiac events can be prevented through lifestyle choices such as being active, getting quality sleep, and nutritious diets, cardiovascular diseases continue to be the cause of 1 in 3 deaths among women each year (Go Red for Women, n.d.). Knowing your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and body mass index are important components of long-term heart health.

Dr. Peter Ermis, the Medical Director for the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program at Texas Children’s emphasized the importance of information when it comes to the prevention of long-term cardiovascular events saying, “It is vital to know yourself and any risk factors you may have as [it] relates to cardiovascular disease. We know that some risk factors are modifiable with proper lifestyle modifications while others may require medication.” Taking the steps to address any abnormal results by seeing your health care provider is critical.

Launched by the American Heart Association, Go Red for Women is a comprehensive platform designed to encourage women to take charge of their heart health and increase awareness of cardiovascular disease. In support of this effort, the Workforce Well-Being Team invites you to take part in heart healthy events taking place Friday, February 3, and all employees are encouraged to wear red in recognition of Go Red for Women Day. Additionally, there will be a Go Red for Women Webinar on Wednesday, February 1 from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m.

You can download the American Heart Association’s recipe booklet, Shop Smart, Eat Smart, for great ideas on how to cook nutritious meals for you and your family. Support heart health and Go Red for Women!
