As we approach the holiday season, Texas Children’s Hospital recognizes that it is possible to create a festive environment for our patients, visitors, and staff, while adhering to fire code standards. Please keep the following in mind as you plan your holiday decorating:
What is allowed?
- Non-combustible decorations
- Artificial, noncombustible trees and decorative vegetation
- Battery-powered lights and decorations
What are the limitations?
- Combustible decorations should not exceed 30 percent of the wall or door to which they are affixed.
- Cubicle walls and doors should not be wrapped (like a package).
- Decorations should not be plugged into electrical outlets.
- Decorations should not be placed within any stairwell.
- Decorations should not be hung from or obstruct fire and life safety building features, including
- Exit paths
- Exit signs
- Fire-rated doors (stairwell doors, cross-corridor doors, mechanical/electrical room doors, etc.)
- Pull stations
- Fire alarm strobes
- Sprinklers
- Fire extinguishers
- Stairwell signage
- Ceilings and/or ceiling tiles, and
- Evacuation maps
What is not allowed?
- Lighted natural candles, open flames, or spark-producing devices
- Combustible window coverings such as posters, sheets, and paper
- Natural plants (including cuttings) and any item made from natural materials (e.g. natural wreaths)
Please note: Documentation supporting the flame resistance and UL-listing (when appropriate) of decorative items shall be maintained by the department displaying the items.
