An Evening with a Legend raises more than $840,000 in research support for Texas Children’s Cancer Center

On May 17 inside the Westin Hotel ballroom, An Evening with a Legend honoring University of Texas System Chancellor William H. McRaven, raised more than $840,000 to support pediatric cancer research at Texas Children’s Cancer Center, the largest pediatric cancer and blood disease treatment program in the United States.

In front of a sold-out crowd of 800 guests, University of Texas Athletics Director Mike Perrin moderated an on-stage interview with McRaven who discussed his role as chancellor, the future of higher education in Texas and tales from his tenure as a four-star admiral known for leading special operations.

Texas Children’s Hospital President and CEO Mark A. Wallace, Camp Periwinkle co-founder Paul Gerson, and Wells Fargo Senior Vice President Kathy Orton each spoke briefly before a video presentation of legends past streamed overhead.

The evening included an incredible performance by the Houston Chapter of The University of Texas Longhorn Alumni Band followed by an unprecedented live auction, which added an additional $160,000 to the fundraising, which totaled more than $840,000 to support pediatric cancer research at Texas Children’s Cancer Center.
