The Center for Children and Women is now dispensing eyeglasses. The addition of this service brings comprehensive optometry care to patients. After completing an eye exam, patients who need eyeglasses can immediately select from the many stylish frames that are available for children of all ages. This new service allows The Center’s patients to have all their optometry needs taken care of without leaving the building.

In addition, The Center’s onsite optometrist makes it easy for Texas Children’s Health Plan members to keep up with eye exams. “I’m so proud to be a part of the Center and the value it provides the community,” says Dr. Brook Komar, The Center optometrist. “And now, in addition to their medical care, the patients can get all their eye care needs met in the same place. This is exciting.”

On May 20, all eyes were on Noel as staff members celebrated the first child receiving glasses at The Center for Children and Women. When Noel’s mom was asked what she thought of the experience, she said, “The process was very easy, and I am happy that The Center is so close to my home. Everyone has been so nice; they have taken good care of us.”

Texas Children’s Health Plan is proud to announce a partnership with The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry to open a dental clinic inside The Center for Children and Women (The Center).

Continuing the philosophy of coordinated care, “UTHealth Dentistry Greenspoint” will provide dental services for Texas Children’s Health Plan members and residents in the greater Greenspoint area of Houston.

“This is a perfect partnership,” said Tangula Taylor, director of operations at The Center for Children and Women. “This collaboration with UTHealth allowed us to expand our scope of services and provide enhanced comprehensive care to our patients. We look forward to fostering this collaborative partnership for many years to come.”

The clinic has three full-time staff members, and dental residents will work there on a rotation basis. In addition to providing great care for patients, the clinic will also serve as a clinical site for School of Dentistry students, offering them valuable clinical experience.

“We’re excited about this initiative,” said John Valenza, DDS, dean of the UTHealth School of Dentistry. “Partnering with The Center for Children and Women provides us the unique opportunity not only to serve the Greenspoint community, but also to provide unique learning experiences for our future dentists and dental hygienists. In addition to seeing pediatric patients, our students will have the opportunity to treat expectant mothers and other patients with special needs.”

The clinic offers a full range of dental services, including fillings, cleanings, X-rays and much more for children, expectant mothers and adults. Operating hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with plans to expand to evenings and Saturdays. Walk-in appointments are welcome. The clinic accepts multiple insurance plans, including Medicaid, CHIP and HMOs, as well as pay-for-service programs.

The Center for Children and Women has been honored by The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) as the first obstetrics practice in Texas to receive the Patient-Centered Specialty Practice Recognition (PCSP). Practices that become recognized under Patient-Centered Specialty Practice Recognition have demonstrated commitment to patient-centered care and clinical quality through: streamlined referral processes and care coordination with referring clinicians, timely patient and caregiver-focused care management and continuous clinical quality improvement.

“We are proud to be the first obstetrics practice in Texas to receive the PCSP recognition,” said Dr. Lisa Hollier, medical director of obstetrics and gynecology at Texas Children’s Health Plan – The Center for Children and Women. “Our care teams work hard to provide the best, comprehensive care for our patients and to empower our patients to become healthier,” she concluded.

Earning NCQA PCSP Recognition shows consumers, private payers and government agencies that the practice has undergone a rigorous review of its capabilities and is committed to sharing information and coordinating care. Recognition also signals to primary care practices that the specialty practice is ready to be an effective partner in caring for patients.

“The Center for Children and Women is honored that our operations and healthcare team meets and exceeds the qualities worthy of the Patient-Centered Specialty Recognition,” stated Tangula Taylor, director of operations at Texas Children’s Health Plan – The Center for Children and Women. “We continue to pursue excellence as we strive to find new and innovative methods to deliver outstanding care to our patients.”

NCQA is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving health care quality. NCQA accredits and certifies a wide range of health care organizations. It also recognizes clinicians and practices in key areas of performances. NCQA is committed to providing health care quality information for consumers, purchasers, health care providers and researchers.
