Department of Pediatric Anesthesiology changes its name to reflect larger role in perioperative medicine

The Texas Children’s Hospital Medical Executive Committee recently approved the name change of the Department of Pediatric Anesthesiology to The Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine. The name change reflects the department’s larger role in perioperative medicine, including an expanded PASS Clinic and the Perioperative Surgical Home, leadership in the delivery of care throughout the entire perioperative system, and surgical and cardiovascular critical care. It also reflects the department’s increasing role in pain medicine, from the creation of a new division and recruitment of leadership and a number of pain physicians, enhanced activity on both the inpatient and outpatient pain services, and major role in pain assessment and treatment on a hospital-wide basis. The department now has 78 pediatric anesthesiologists and are the largest such group in the U.S.
